Biography
Born in Toledo, Ohio on March 13, 1976, Stephen Marshall Howell completed grades kindergarten through eighth at Regina Coeli School. His family relocated to Temperance, Michigan in 1989, and he finished his secondary education at Bedford Senior High School with a diploma in 1994. During those years he immersed himself in both writing and music, acquiring his first guitar in 1991 after being spellbound by the technique of Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page.
Howell joined the high-school newspaper staff in 1993 and began composing record reviews. A modest journalism scholarship from the Great Lakes Interscholastic Press Association supported his enrollment at Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio beginning in fall 1994. While there he contributed articles to the campus paper, The BG News. At the outset of his sophomore year he switched his major to popular culture to broaden his exposure to print, television, and film, designating music history as his specialization.
In fall 1995 a friend’s invitation led Howell to serve as an on-air personality at the university’s AM station WFAL. One assignment produced a live broadcast from the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in March 1996; he remained with WFAL until receiving his degree in spring 1998.
During summer 1997 he interned at Montage, the Toledo quarterly devoted to arts and humanities, and simultaneously led the all-original rock band Fuzgunn as guitarist and vocalist. The group performed at local parties and radio programs and recorded an EP in the Bowling Green State University music studio before dissolving in December 1998.
Howell next played lead guitar in two other Bowling Green acts: Achilles Last Band, a Led Zeppelin tribute, and Death to the Pixies, which honored the Boston band Pixies.
After earning his bachelor’s degree in May 1998, he began freelance contributions to the weekly Monroe Guardian in Monroe, Michigan and the monthly Toledo City Paper. In January 1999 the Toledo City Paper hired him full-time as an editorial research assistant.
Howell now works as a staff writer for the Toledo City Paper, which converted to weekly publication, and also contributes to its sister titles Toledo Area Parent News, Ann Arbor Family Press, and Baby Steps. ~ Stephen Marshall
