Biography
Steroid Maximus originated early in the 1990s as yet another eccentric outlet for the prolific J.G. Thirlwell. He recruited several favored underground players to realize the project, resulting in the swift appearance of both Quilombo and Gondawanaland. Thirlwell then reverted to the Foetus moniker and maintained it for the next decade before choosing to revive Steroid Maximus. Avid supporters and labelheads Mike Patton and Greg Werckman drew the endeavor to Ipecac Records. Ectopia extended the approach of prior Maximus releases by merging reverb-drenched “spy” music with manic blaxploitation-style funk. Thirlwell also assembled a live Maximus presentation aided by Lounge Lizard Steve Bernstein and the UCLA brass ensemble.
