Biography
Steve Dixon ranks among Atlanta’s foremost drummers through his assured handling of funky, groove-driven rhythms. His syncopated style has anchored the Atlanta funk outfits Encore, previously known as Cool Joe, and Mz. Fishe And The New groove.
Dixon took up drumming at four, prompted by older brothers Chip and Darryl, whose rehearsals filled the family home. He began by copying Chip’s approach at the kit and soon absorbed the funk patterns associated with James Brown and Kool And The Gang. At thirteen he joined the Rahway Senior High School Marching Band, and after leaving junior high he kept performing with that school’s marching unit as well as its concert and jazz groups.
