Steve Swell maintains a close tie to the New York downtown scene as an underappreciated trombonist who thrives as a versatile collaborator ready for any musical setting. The instrument entered his life by chance at the age of ten. During his time at Jersey City State College in 1973 he formed an enduring bond with drummer Lou Grassi. Studies with Roswell Rudd proved most influential, alongside the work of Grachan Moncur III and Bill Watrous. He advanced his craft through engagements with Lionel Hampton, Buddy Rich, and Jaki Byard. Broadway productions and performances at the Roseland occupied much of his schedule in the early 1980s. Encounters with Ken McIntyre and Walter Thompson in the mid-1980s revived his commitment to creative music, while Herb Robertson and Hank Roberts supplied his initial European experiences. Greater visibility arrived in the early 1990s through work with Tim Berne’s ensemble, Joey Baron’s Barondown, and Phillip Johnston’s Big Trouble. Sideman roles later placed him in The Little Huey Creative Music Orchestra, Lou Grassi’s PoBand, and Jemeel Moondoc’s Jus Grew Orchestra. His debut recording under his own leadership, Observations, appeared in 1996 alongside saxophonist Chris Kelsey. Cooperative projects such as the Implicate Order, the Transcendentalists, and the Particle Data Group followed, together with his own shifting quartet and trio lineups. Over time he established a lasting rapport with Ken Filiano and Lou Grassi that encompassed numerous joint endeavors. A fresh trio featuring bassist Tom Abbs and drummer Geoff Mann began in 2002. The first documentation of his Unified Theory of Sound project, involving Jemeel Moondoc, Cooper-Moore, Wilber Morris, Kevin Norton, and Matt LaVelle, surfaced the next year.
