Originating from Scotland, Lindsay previously handled guitar and vocals for the chronically overlooked Scottish pop rock outfit the Big Dish. After the group dissolved in 1992 he shifted focus to composition, scoring multiple television soundtracks and balancing that pursuit by taking on management and production duties. Early in the following decade he rejoined forces with onetime Big Dish colleague Craig Armstrong for the 2002 album As If To Nothing. That partnership encouraged Lindsay to return to solo work, leading to an ambitious European orchestral tour ahead of his 2004 debut Exit Music. Shaped by his soundtrack background, the record skirted close to lightweight pop inconsequence yet was salvaged by his expressive singing and Armstrong’s elegant string scoring. Its 2007 major-label successor Kite gained strength from a fresh interpretation of the Pixies classic ‘Monkey Gone To Heaven’, though much of the remaining material drifted without consequence.
