Strange Boutique, an ethereal gothic rock outfit from Washington, D.C., first surfaced from the city's hardcore scene in the 1980s. Every original member had previously performed in more aggressive punk groups before pursuing a different artistic direction upon forming Strange Boutique in 1987. Their opening era extended into the mid-'90s and yielded multiple albums of mysterious, moody rock, among them 1991's The Loved One. After repeated lineup shifts, a long hiatus, and the death of original guitarist Fred Smith, Strange Boutique reunited in 2019 to resume performing and to issue new material such as the 2021 EP Jet Stream and the 2024 single "The Night Birds."

Vocalist Monica Richards, drummer Daniel Ingram, and guitarist Fred "Freak" Smith established the band. Steve Willett answered a classified ad in the weekly paper, joined the group, and strengthened their chemistry. They soon began composing songs that fused punk-scene energy with gothic textures and more relaxed melodic sensibilities. The debut album The Loved One appeared in 1991, followed by Charm in 1993 and The Kindest Worlds in 1994. During those years Strange Boutique experienced several personnel changes before falling dormant in 1994.

A one-off reunion concert in 2004 coincided with the appearance of a discography compilation. In 2019 Strange Boutique performed at the DC9 night club in Washington, D.C., to celebrate the life of the late original guitarist Fred Smith, with Rand Blackwell on drums and Dennis Kane on guitar. That show prompted the members to create new music, leading to the 2021 release of Jet Stream, an EP of fresh songs. Strange Boutique kept developing tracks and issued "The Night Birds" in November 2024.
