Biography
David von Beck of Seattle created Straw Dogs to serve as a vehicle for his shimmering, mellow country rock. Having first toured across the United States with a complete lineup behind the band's initial release Legends & Lies, von Beck reduced Straw Dogs to a duo by enlisting his longtime associate Darren Smith of Colorado's Stranger Neighbor. Von Beck and Smith received a Billboard songwriting award for their work on the 2001 album Any Place At All, which also secured them the support slot for Crash Test Dummies' concluding tour. In 2003, Hum of the Motor emerged as a full-band effort celebrating the open road and Americana through its poignant "No Depression" style tracks.
