Garage punk duo Street Eaters came together in 2007 when bassist John No, previously of Fleshies and Triclops!, crossed paths with drummer Megan March, formerly of Before the Fall and Younger Lovers, at Berkeley, California's renowned 924 Gilman Street venue. Bonding over shared enthusiasm for '90s punk, riot grrrl, and D.I.Y. culture, the pair established the project as an equal partnership, dividing songwriting tasks while foregrounding motifs of alienation alongside personal and political strife. They fused the activist ethos drawn from the '90s Pacific Northwest underground with the loose energy of their East Bay punk revival background, presenting pointed lyrics through call-and-response vocals and prominently trebly bass, carving out a sound that bridged the experimental post-punk of Dutch group the Ex with the energetic indie rock of Portland's the Thermals. Their recorded introduction arrived in 2008 via a split 7" alongside Anaheim punk-pop trio White Night, followed by the We See Monsters EP in 2009. Another split 7", this time with Chico, California-based Severance Package, appeared in 2010 while the duo prepared its first full-length effort, Rusty Eyes and Hydrocarbons, scheduled for release in July 2011 through the Plan-It-X and Bakery Outlet imprints.
