Born as the sibling of pianist Claude Williamson, Stu Williamson became a regular presence across West Coast jazz sessions throughout the 1950s. After settling in Los Angeles in 1949, he performed at intervals with Stan Kenton in 1951, Woody Herman from 1952 to 1953, and Kenton once more from 1954 to 1955, along with briefer engagements alongside Billy May and Charlie Barnet. Known for his mellow tone and most closely tied to Shelly Manne in recurring work from 1954 to 1958, Williamson appeared on countless dates until withdrawing from the scene in 1968. Battling addiction, Stu Williamson devoted the bulk of his final two decades to life outside music.
