Biography
Suarasama, an Indonesian world music ensemble, draws listeners into a spellbinding blend of Sumatran and Malay roots interwoven with influences spanning Sufi traditions to Middle Eastern sounds. Active together from the mid-1990s onward, the group reached wider audiences and earned broader notice once Chicago’s Drag City label reissued their album Fajar Di Atas Awan in 2008, then followed with a 2023 reissue of the 2013 release Timeline.
The ensemble began in 1995 when husband-and-wife team Irwansyah Harahap and Rithaony Hutajulu, both musicologists at the University of North Sumatra in Medan, formed the project. Harahap concentrated on stringed instruments such as oud, guitar, and gambus while Hutajulu supplied the vocals. For Radio France Internationale they cut the 1998 album Fajar Di Atas Awan, which, with help from sympathetic additional musicians, revealed an expansive stylistic range through unhurried, hypnotic pieces that traveled far beyond their own cultural origins. Two further albums appeared: Rites of Passage in 2002 and Lebah in 2008.
Visibility grew sharply in late 2008 after Drag City’s Chicago office reissued the debut to strong critical response throughout the United States and parts of Europe. The musicians kept touring internationally and delivered their fourth album, Timeline, in 2013. The following year several Suarasama tracks were featured in the documentary film Un-common Sound: Song of Peace and Reconciliation. In 2023 Drag City again reissued Timeline to mark its tenth anniversary.
