Drawing from noise rock influences paired with conceptual melodies, Subset's material opens fresh angles on alternative pop and rock. The Texas-formed trio, shaped by groups such as Sonic Youth, carves distinctive paths inside experimental rock. The unit came together in 1999 when Lindsey Simon, covering vocals, guitar, and bass, joined forces with Nathan Fish on the same instruments. Nathan's brother Joel Fish joined next, taking keyboards and rounding out the initial three members. After a series of rehearsals the Texans issued their debut single Circuitis to strong notice. Tom Hudson entered soon afterward to cover drums, only months before Joel exited and the group settled into its final trio format. Live appearances nevertheless kept earning strong press notices along with a steadily expanding audience. After appearing on several regional compilations the band booked studio time in late 1999 to cut its first album. Overpass reached stores in 2000 through Post-Parlo Records as the trio's initial full-length release.
