Sue Evans supplied rhythmic backing on both trap drums and assorted percussion instruments to jazz and pop ensembles along with a range of instrumentalists and singers. After studying with Warren Smith and Sonny Igoe she earned her diploma from the High School of Music and Art in 1969. From the late 1960s into the mid-1970s she served as drummer for Judy Collins on tours throughout Europe and America, while simultaneously working as percussionist with Gil Evans on the road and in the studio from 1969 through 1982. Throughout the 1970s she appeared with Steve Kuhn and the Jazz Composer’s Orchestra led by Roswell Rudd; in the 1980s her collaborators included Michael Franks, Suzanne Vega and Tony Bennett. Recording dates from the 1970s placed her alongside Bobby Jones, George Benson, Urbie Green and Art Farmer, and she joined Morgana King for a session in the 1980s. Evans never fronted any dates as leader, yet her playing surfaces on numerous CDs spotlighting Gil Evans, Benson, Green, Farmer and King among others.
