Biography
Hailing from New York City, Suffrajett produces lo-fi music marked by aggression and groove while stopping short of garage rock conventions. Swaggering tracks from the group blend grimy textures with soulful depth, anchored by Simi’s vocals that alternate between sweet and raw qualities. Simi, a classically trained singer who grew up in Woodstock, NY, joined forces with Chicagoan guitarist Jason Chasko—who had contributed to Liz Phair’s Whitechocolatespaceegg—to launch Suffrajett in 2002. Kevin Roberts of Elysian Fields handles bass, and Frank Ferrer of the Psychedelic Furs sits behind the drums, lending a glam inflection to the band’s nasty rock strut. Issued by In Music We Trust in May of 2003, the self-titled debut presents a raucous collection of Lower East Side grit accented by catchy hooks.
