Guitarist Claire Simson and drummer James Cuthbert had maintained an inseparable friendship dating back to age three, with heavy music acting as the central influence on their respective ambitions. During their teenage years at the same school they encountered bassist Heidi McEwen, and although each already recognized the others’ abilities, the trio had never yet joined forces musically. That situation shifted once Simson connected with vocalist Jess Mayers, whose approach drew partial inspiration from an earlier project of Simson’s. After discussing music together they decided to launch a band, promptly recruiting the remaining two musicians and commencing rehearsals. Though still unrefined, the quartet assembled several covers and performed them for classmates. They soon expanded their activity across Britain and captured a well-received local demo in summer 2000. A supporting tour with My Ruin supplied their initial touring exposure, while subsequent dates alongside Disturbed and Guano Apes further elevated their profile. Producer Colin Richardson guided them through an EP whose results prompted Music For Nations to offer a contract shortly afterward. The members devoted the ensuing summer to songwriting and preparation before entering the studio in August 2001. Their debut full-length album, Becoming Something Else, arrived in March 2002.
