Distinguishing her from Sulene Fleming, the vocalist linked to Brand New Heavies and Dimitris & Sulene, Brooklyn-based musician Sulene van der Walt performs under the shortened name Sulene. She crafts anthemic indie pop in her solo work, while also scoring film and television projects under her complete name and serving as a touring guitarist for Nate Ruess, Betty Who, and Candy Hearts. A native of South Africa, she picked up the guitar at age 14 and completed a film-scoring degree at Berklee College of Music in Boston in 2013.

Her first screen credits arrived in 2014 with contributions to Barry Levinson’s The Humbling and additional music for the Liev Schreiber crime series Ray Donovan. While maintaining her schedule as a sidewoman on tour, she expanded on those assignments and various uncredited film jobs by scoring the short films The Weight of Wind in 2016 and Strength and Fortune in 2017. January 2017 saw the release of her debut single as Sulene, the reflective synth pop tune “What We Had,” written during travels; her first EP, Strange, appeared that spring on Sleep Well Records.
