Sunburst emerged in 1970 as a briefly active yet widely respected Afro-rock ensemble based in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania. Drawn from multiple nations, the musicians fused diverse African traditions with funk and rock elements from the West. Their uplifting messages championed the pursuit of freedom, Black pride, unity, and joy. Zairean guitarist Hembi Flory Kongo assembled the initial lineup alongside drummer Johnny "Rocks" Fernandes, bassist Bashir Idi Farhan, and organist/vocalist Kassim Magati. Zambian singer James Mpungo soon stepped in as lead vocalist, prompting the group to interpret songs by James Brown and Santana before shaping an original approach they named “Kitoto Sound.” Exposure grew after a 1973 broadcast on Radio Tanzania, followed by a victory as Best Band in a Dar Es Salaam contest and the release of singles on Kenya’s Moto Moto imprint. Years of road work and personnel shifts led to the 1976 recording of their only album, Ave Africa, captured in Lusaka, Zambia. Subsequent 45s appeared on Tanzania’s TFC label, yet meager earnings forced the band’s dissolution. In 2016 Strut assembled the complete surviving recordings under the title Ave Africa: The Complete Recordings 1973-1976.
