Sunroof constitutes an enduring yet understated alliance between producer and engineer Gareth Jones and Mute Records founder Daniel Miller. Their output consists of ethereal abstractions shaped by Krautrock, synth pop, and foundational electronic traditions. The project has chiefly served as an outlet for remixes and covers drawn from artists including Can, Neu!, and To Rococo Rot, with activity extending back to the 1990s. Electronic Music Improvisations, Vol. 1 marked the first collection of original Sunroof material when it appeared in 2021, followed by successive volumes in 2023 and 2024.

British producers Gareth Jones and Daniel Miller have sustained a working partnership since the early 1980s, beginning with their involvement on Depeche Mode’s third album, Construction Time Again. The pair also mixed or co-produced recordings by additional flagship Mute artists such as Erasure, Nitzer Ebb, and Fad Gadget. Alongside these assignments, they pursued private studio experiments that eventually crystallized as the Sunroof remix project. Starting in 1997, reworkings of material by Can, Pizzicato Five, Kreidler, and Goldfrapp surfaced on remix albums and singles, while their version of “Hero” was included on the 1998 tribute album A Homage to Neu!. After the project fell dormant following the mid-2000s, Miller and Jones resumed activity in 2019 with spontaneous, unrehearsed sessions on modular synthesizers. Mute released Sunroof’s debut album, Electronic Music Improvisations, Vol. 1, in 2021. Vol. 2 assembled within a few months and appeared in 2023. Vol. 3, another sequence of impromptu compositions produced on Eurorack modular systems, followed in 2024.
