Emerging from Japan in 1991, Super Junky Monkey attained far greater visibility in the United States than at home by channeling the majority of their promotional activity and concert dates across the Pacific. Anchored by charismatic vocalist Mutsumi Takahashi, guitarist Keiko, bassist Shinobu Kawai, and the inventively dubbed Matsudaaahh!! on drums, the quartet lingered in the Japanese underground while forging an idiosyncratic mixture of metal, rap, and indie rock before committing their sound to tape with the 1993 live album Cabbage. Issued stateside, the recording drew warm press acclaim. Sensing the opportunity presented by American listeners, the band pursued and ultimately obtained a deal with Sony, issuing four official albums before the unexpected death of Takahashi in 1999. Devastated, the remaining members elected to disband rather than continue without their singer. Condor Records later issued the greatest-hits collection Songs Are Our Universe in 2001.
