Biography
Melbourne, Australia-based duo Super Wild Horses delivers an energetic, stripped-down brand of garage pop shaped by post-punk influences. The group consists of Amy Franz and Hayley McKee, who trade off on guitar, drums, keyboards, and vocals. The pair first met in 1996 as students at an all-girls Catholic high school. After moving to Melbourne in 2008 to launch the band, they issued a self-titled single the next spring that revealed their Breeders-esque harmonies and raw-edged arrangements. Their debut full-length, Fifteen, appeared in 2010 on Aarght! in Australia and HoZac in the U.S., mining emotional territory rooted in adolescence along with themes of heartbreak and freedom that carried a subtle political subtext. A U.S. tour that included a slot at Gonerfest, plus opening dates in Australia for Foo Fighters, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, and Best Coast, lifted the band’s profile. While mapping out their second album, the duo spent time broadening and sharpening their sound by focusing on tone and dynamics to achieve greater nuance. The effort resulted in the much improved Crosswords, produced by Mikey Young of Eddy Current Suppression Ring and released by Dot Dash and Remote Control in late 2013.
