Biography
Supercrush channels the spirit of guitar-driven acts such as Teenage Fanclub and Weezer, balancing tuneful hooks against raw sonic force in the manner of high-wire performers with flowing locks. This West Coast outfit first shaped those irresistible pop textures across multiple singles throughout the 2010s before unleashing their melody-packed debut full-length, SODO Pop, in 2020. A sweetly effervescent follow-up appeared two years later in the form of the Melody Maker EP.
Before forming Supercrush, guitarist and vocalist Mark Palm participated in an array of groups spanning hardcore and heavy rock, with Modern Charms standing out as the most melodic entry thanks to its shoegaze leanings. After parting ways with that project and relocating from San Francisco to Vancouver, he set his sights on material that fused power pop with grunge elements while maintaining an upbeat lyrical perspective, a departure from much of his earlier work. Echoing the heft of Matthew Sweet alongside a milder take on Nirvana, Palm joined forces with drummer Aaron O'Neil to issue a run of singles that opened with “Lifted” in 2013 on Grave Mistake. Debt Offensive then put out three additional tracks between 2015 and 2018, a measured release schedule reflecting Palm’s insistence on issuing only his strongest compositions. Those efforts were compiled on the 2019 anthology Never Let You Drift Away, around the same period when Palm, bassist Phil Jones, drummer Allen Trainor, and other collaborators began shaping Supercrush’s inaugural album.
Working alongside Jones and BOAT’s Jackson Long across several studios, Palm and his associates crafted a record that evokes a forgotten gem of 1990s major-label power pop, complete with sugary melodies, thick processed guitar textures, and the occasional pedal steel ballad. Don Giovanni Records released the resulting SODO Pop in October 2020. The band resurfaced in June 2022 with the equally buoyant Melody Maker EP.
