Surgery emerged as a gritty, unrestrained post-hardcore outfit steeped in blues from Manhattan’s Lower East Side, featuring Sean McDonnell on vocals, Scott Kleber on guitar, John Lachapelle on bass, and John Leamy on drums. The group landed on the abrasive Amphetamine Reptile roster, where its raw approach suited the label perfectly, and issued its first full-length album, Nationwide, in 1991. Two years afterward came the EP The Trim, 9th Ward High Roller. Caught up in the major-label gold rush that followed Nirvana and Helmet’s big-ticket deals, the quartet moved to Atlantic, distributed by WEA, for the 1994 release Shimmer. Mainstream attention never really materialized beyond a handful of airings of the track “Off the A-List” on MTV’s 120 Minutes, a development that left the musicians indifferent. McDonnell died on January 18, 1995, after asthma-related complications, prompting the surviving members to disband out of grief.
