Born on 3 May 1985 in Liverpool, Merseyside, England, Hedges came into the world without sight. She began singing at the age of six and soon became a frequent guest at country music clubs throughout Merseyside. From ten onward she concentrated on performing original material and later formed a songwriting partnership with lyricist Paula Stafford. The pair supplied most of the songs for her well-received 1999 debut album, Myron Angel, whose title refers to the American novelist who unearthed Native American paintings and who is also the subject of the opening track, ‘The Ballad Of Carrizo Plain’. Gary Hall produced the record and duets with her on ‘Footprints In The Dust’. The moving ‘When She Cries’ portrays a mother raising her child and features the line, ‘Sometimes I just thank God that she don’t look a lot like you.’ In his sleeve note American singer-songwriter Tom Russell writes, ‘Here is a very young, sightless English girl who sings with a mature soulfulness. We’ve sung together many times... she has a great future.’
