Biography
Vocalist Susie Thorne grew up immersed in contrasting sounds, from the choral traditions she absorbed alongside her mother in church to the jazz her father performed with his group. In her Omaha, NE, childhood she accompanied her mother on piano and joined her father’s ensemble as a singer, while her personal listening leaned heavily toward Motown. Prior to entering the University of Colorado as a piano-performance major, she toured the United States with an R&B ensemble and appeared as a solo performer throughout Europe. Once on campus she felt jazz’s appeal return with renewed force; as a vocal-performance student she studied the recorded work of Anita O’Day and Ella Fitzgerald. After several years of engagements in Japan and Hong Kong, Thorne prepared her debut solo album, Love for Sale, released by Triple Seven Productions in 2000.
