Ukrainian producer Svarog emerged as a key presence in the late-2010s deep techno movement, shaping a dark, swirling, hypnotic aesthetic through numerous EPs issued on Circular, Illegal Alien, Norite, and Affin.

Born Oleksa Moroz in Lviv, the historic Ukrainian city nestled beside the Carpathian Mountains, he grew up in an intellectual household attuned to the nation’s cultural heritage. After beginning his career as a DJ, he turned to production and adopted the alias Svarog, drawn from the ancient Slavic deity of fire. Mountains, architecture, and mythology fueled his vision of embedding spiritual and magical qualities within his work. Circular issued his first commercially available release, the digital-only EP “Circular 16,” in 2014. Additional mostly digital EPs appeared on Illegal Alien, Norite, Nachtstrom Schallplatten, and Dynamic Reflection, while he performed widely across Europe. His textured, mystical, and brooding style guided listeners through haunting sonic landscapes and placed him within the expanding deep or hypnotic techno community alongside Luigi Tozzi, Feral, Nørbak, and Saphileaum. Evod released his debut album, the digital-only Construction, in 2015. In 2018, Joachim Spieth’s Affin label presented the physical 12-inch records “Phenomenon” and “Environment,” followed in 2019 by “Shadows” and his second digital-only album, Archives.
