Biography
Roots rockers Swampmeat Family Band trace their origins to the United Kingdom, even if their music evokes American soil for most listeners. Straight-ahead rock & roll forms their core, bolstered by the gritty bite of blues and the wistful drawl of old-school country. Dan Finnemore, previously a member of Low Cut Connie, guides the group; their raw early duo efforts appear on the 2016 collection Gin & Tonic, while the quartet-era releases Too Many Things to Hide in 2018 and Muck! in 2020 expanded their sonic reach without diluting their rustic drive.
The band took shape in the UK’s Midlands as an outgrowth of the duo Swampmeat, where Finnemore handled vocals and guitar alongside drummer T-Bird Jones. Their lean, garage-tinged roots rock blended pronounced strains of country and blues. From 2005 through 2009 they issued several CD-R recordings, yet activity paused once Finnemore relocated to the United States. He settled in Philadelphia and joined the boisterous outfit Low Cut Connie, contributing to their initial trio of albums—Get Out the Lotion in 2011, Call Me Sylvia in 2012, and Hi Honey in 2015—before departing on good terms to return home.
Back in the Midlands, Swampmeat evolved into the four-piece Swampmeat Family Band when Finnemore and Jones added guitarist Tommy Hughes, formerly of Terror Watts, and bassist Richard March, known from Bentley Rhythm Ace and Pop Will Eat Itself. The 2016 release Gin & Tonic gathered highlights from the duo’s now-unavailable CD-R catalog and introduced the expanded lineup, which debuted its own material on 2018’s Too Many Things to Hide. Positive notices and vigorous performances built their audience, leading to the tighter, more varied sound of 2020’s Muck!, which heightened the twang while preserving their rock foundation.
