Sweet Justice originated in 2002 when Frank Meyer, the former singer and guitarist of the Streetwalkin' Cheetahs, pulled the band together. Having written the screenplay for the independent film Fat Cats, Meyer required source music and reached out to bassist Bruce Duff, whose résumé already included work with ADZ, Jeff Dahl, and .45 Grave, plus drummer Todd Westover, once of the BellRays, to cut tracks at his home studio in pursuit of a 1970s hard rock atmosphere. Although the three players came from separate punk rock groups, the resulting trio quickly revealed both the ability and the flexibility to pursue multiple stylistic routes. Satisfied with the recordings, Meyer and Duff chose to treat Sweet Justice as a continuing concern. Once the Cheetahs disbanded and the project became full-time, Westover stepped away from the drum kit and Chris Markwood, another BellRays veteran, assumed the role. The band began gigging on the Los Angeles club circuit, appearing alongside Rocket from the Tombs, the Lazy Cowgirls, Legal Weapon, and Zeke. After placing tracks on a pair of compilation albums, they issued their first recording on a split 7" single with legendary Midwest rocker Scott Morgan. In 2003 Sweet Justice signed with the Philadelphia independent label Real O Mind Records, which released the group’s debut full-length album in the spring of 2004.
