Drawing from neo-psychedelia, noise pop, and Ennio Morricone film scores, Swell originated in San Francisco during 1989 after vocalist/guitarist David Freel and drummer Sean Kirkpatrick opted to cut an album together. They brought in second guitarist John Dettman along with bassist Monte Vallier, then laid down a self-titled debut that appeared on the band’s own Psycho Specific imprint in April 1990. The group’s initial concert came that August when they opened for Mazzy Star at San Francisco’s I-Beam; afterward they played various California venues and issued their sophomore effort, Well?, by February 1992. Dettman departed shortly thereafter, yet Freel and Kirkpatrick pressed ahead until Def American Records offered to distribute Well? more broadly a year after its original release. With Tom Hays added on guitar in Dettman’s place, the band tracked a third album that American issued as 41 in November 1993. Later releases comprised 1997’s Too Many Days Without Thinking and 1998’s For All the Beautiful People, followed by Everybody Wants to Know in spring 2001. Once the band went dormant, Freel pursued solo work and moved to Oregon, where he launched a custom vinyl-cutting operation; he passed away on April 12, 2022 at the age of 64.
