Sy Ari Brockington, who records as Sy Ari da Kid, established himself as an Atlanta-based singer, rapper, and producer whose work fuses trap beats with polished, Auto-Tune-infused R&B. His tightly wound, cinematic tracks often examine romantic entanglements, emotional fallout, private struggles, topical headlines, and the grind of street existence. He first appeared in 2011 on The Ultrasound and delivered more than a dozen projects throughout that decade, among them B4 the Heartbreak in 2016 and Emancipation Proclamation in 2019; the 2020s brought further full-length releases such as A Toxic Heartbreak and Alone But Not Lonely.

Although born in the Bronx, Brockington relocated to Atlanta at age nine and has resisted framing his sound strictly as New York or Southern rap. Early exposure to his brother and cousin sparked his interest in rapping, and after finishing high school he gained notice as a battle rapper on the city’s Hot 107.9 FM. Teaching himself production, he began tracking material in Pro Tools and launched the Arrogant Music imprint in 2006. Mixtapes followed from 2011 onward, featuring joint work with Future, Gucci Mane, Waka Flocka Flame, Timbaland, and former classmate K Camp. Speculation in 2015 that he had ghostwritten for Drake was later addressed by Brockington, who refuted the claims following a collaboration with Drake’s co-writer Quentin Miller. The 2016 mixtape B4 the Heartbreak featured the single “Priorities,” a duet with trap-soul singer Bryson Tiller that broadened his reach within R&B circles.

An announcement in 2017 stated that Brockington had joined Cash Money, yet after appearing on label head Birdman’s track “It’s Calm” he continued issuing music independently through Cinq Music Group. By the close of 2018 he had already issued 2 Soon, 2 Weeks No Diss, and Better Safe Than Sy Ari. The following year saw the arrival of Emancipation Proclamation alongside After the Heartbreak, the latter boasting contributions from Eric Bellinger and Asiahn. His pace remained steady through 2020 and 2021, yielding It Was Unwritten, another A Toxic Heartbreak, It’s Not You It’s Me, and Sy Ari Not Sorry.
