Biography
Charlotte Hatherley fronts the electro-pop outfit Sylver Tongue, whose title draws equal influence from David Sylvian and Lyra Silvertongue, the central figure in Phillip Pullman's His Dark Materials book series. Having stepped away from her role as guitarist in Ash during 2006, she focused on independent work that yielded the 2007 album Deep Blue—itself the successor to her 2004 debut Grey Will Fade—followed by New Worlds in 2009. Additional live duties saw her join KT Tunstall's backing group on the road before later serving in Bat for Lashes' touring lineup, all while she sustained development of her personal recordings. Sylver Tongue's aesthetic pulled from Sylvian's catalog alongside the sounds of Prince, David Bowie, and Grace Jones, together with science-fiction themes and the timbres of her analog Juno synthesizer. Producer James Rutledge joined her to shape the project's first EP, Something Big, issued via Dancing Coins, the imprint operated by a collective that counted Cold Specks' Al Spx among its members. The November 2012 release of Something Big immediately preceded another stretch of dates supporting Bat for Lashes.
