Syreeta Thompson, the Manhattan resident performing under the stage name "The Trumpet Lady," works as a trumpeter, vocalist, and educator whose style merges jazz and R&B influences with gospel music. In addition to her performances, she maintains an active schedule as a clinician and instructor, serving as instrumental music teacher at New Jersey's Cicely Tyson School of Fine and Performing Arts and as instrumental music coordinator for Dorinda Clark-Cole's Singers and Musicians Conference. Raised in Chicago, she started trumpet lessons at age 12, playing in her church band while taking classes at the city's Sherwood Conservatory of Music. After completing high school, Thompson received a Bachelor of Music from Rutgers University and later earned a Master of Music in film scoring, jazz composition, and arranging from New York University. Since beginning her professional work, she has shared stages with jazz and gospel artists including Von Freeman, Alvin Batiste, Orbert Davis, Hezekiah Walker, DeWayne Woods, and others. Her debut album, Gabriel's Praise, appeared in 2007 and received a Stellar Award for Best Instrumental Album. The follow-up, In His Presence, arrived in 2011. In 2016 she issued the Winner EP, which featured the single "Change Is on the Way," and the full-length Evolution of a Winner came out the next year.
