London, England-based duo Syzygy consists of Dominic Glynn and Justin McKay, whose initial encounter occurred toward the close of the 80s during Glynn’s part-time role supplying incidental music for BBC Television’s Doctor Who series. Shared influences from Detroit techno, including Derrick May and Juan Atkins, led their earliest tracks to surface via the Infonet record label, after which they issued two additional 12-inch releases under the guises Mind Control and Zendik. A more enduring affiliation with Rising High Records followed, under the Syzygy name. The EPs Discovery and Can I Dream subsequently raised their standing within the ‘intelligent techno’ club scene. Their debut double album took its title from the phrase ‘the collective consciousness of the planet, a phenomenon for which there is no easy explanation’. Presented as an extended concept album, the work centered on a musical fable tracing the earth’s development.
