Biography
Since the early 1980s, when it assumed its present configuration as an ensemble, Canada's Tafelmusik—formally known as the Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra—has ranked among the leading North American ensembles devoted to historically informed interpretations of Baroque repertoire. The orchestra has produced an unusually extensive discography, releasing more than 75 albums that have achieved wide international recognition.
Tafelmusik originated in the late 1970s as a quartet focused on chamber works. Its name derives from a Telemann anthology whose title translates as “table music,” denoting compositions intended for mealtime settings. Under violinist Jeanne Lamon, who served as music director through 2014, the ensemble expanded into a full orchestra, reaching 11 members during the 1980s and settling at 19 around the turn of the millennium. The affiliated Tafelmusik Chamber Choir was founded in 1981.
Headquartered in Toronto at Trinity St. Paul's Church, the group performs on period instruments and adheres to documented Baroque practices. Its growth paralleled increasing public interest in the era's music, and by 2000 it maintained a schedule of near-weekly concerts across Canada, North America, and Europe. Despite rivalry from leading European Baroque orchestras, Tafelmusik has made repeated visits to Britain, Germany, France, and additional European nations. During the 1990s and 2000s it held the position of ensemble-in-residence at Germany's Klang und Raum Festival, later extending its schedule to include East Asian engagements.
Lamon stepped down as music director in 2014 and as chief artistic advisor in 2017 yet has remained active as a performer with the group. Violinist Elia Citterio assumed the role of music director in 2017, the same year Tafelmusik appeared at the installation of Julie Payette, a former member of the Tafelmusik Chamber Choir, as Canada's governor-general.
The orchestra's catalog of more than 75 recordings, many issued on Harmonia Mundi and Sony Classical, remains a defining achievement; in recent seasons it has issued material on its own Tafelmusik Media imprint. Although its programming now occasionally reaches the works of Beethoven and his contemporaries, the focus stays centered on the Baroque. In 2019 the ensemble issued the album Vivaldi con Amore.
