Biography
Australian vocalist and guitarist Matthew de la Hunty assembled Tall Tales & True in Sydney during 1983, recruiting bassist Paul Miskin and drummer Willie McCracken, who yielded his spot to Dave Rashleigh three years later. The group’s self-titled debut album finally appeared in 1986 and featured the single “Wasted Life”/“Good Heart Gone Bad.” Two four-track EPs, Up Our Street in 1987 and You’ve Got Your Troubles in 1988, preceded the band’s contribution of a remixed “You’ve Got Your Troubles” to the Youngblood compilation issued in September 1988.
A contract with rooArt soon followed, prompting a split single with the Trilobites later that year: “You’ve Got Your Troubles”/“All Hail the New Right.” Their sophomore LP, Shiver, arrived in May 1989 and yielded the paired releases “Trust”/“Heaven Knows” in April and “Hold On”/“Lullaby Number 1” in June. Violinist Vanessa Lucas augmented the lineup for the April 1991 EP Superstition Highway; the band subsequently toured with the Hummingbirds and Canadian act the Pursuit of Happiness while issuing the singles “Lifeboat” and “Summer of Love,” both of which surfaced on the May 1992 album Revenge. Two additional tracks from that record, “Watching the Wind Blow” in May and “Looking for a Place” in October, were also released as singles.
The group’s concluding album, Tilt, adopted a stronger garage-rock edge and spawned the EPs You Sleep I’ll Drive in October 1994 and Moonshine in January 1995. Tall Tales & True disbanded shortly afterward, after which de la Hunty launched his solo career with Scissors, Paper, Rock in May 1999.
