Biography
Born Judith Coster, Tammy St. John resided in Essex, England, and delivered vocals with a profound soulfulness that might readily have originated on the far side of the Atlantic. Her output from the early through middle 1960s, issued chiefly by Pye Records, drew scant attention during that period. Later, however, a handful of those sides found favor amid the Northern Soul revival. “Life and Soul of the Party,” “He’s the One for Me,” “Nobody Knows What’s Going on in My Mind,” and “Stay Together Young Lovers” became prohibitively scarce and costly on the vintage market once they resurfaced in the new century, transforming St. John into an uncommon cult figure who had escaped the neglect that had long enveloped her initial efforts.
