Following the 2003 dissolution of Gibraltar's Melon Diesel, which had issued three successful albums, the group's members divided into separate projects. Bassist Guy Palmer and drummer Adrián Pozo launched the English-speaking Area 52, while lead vocalist Dylan Ferro joined guitarists Dani Fa and Danny Bugeja to establish Taxi, aiming to sustain Melon Diesel's style of Spanish rock. Early performances around Gibraltar featured supplementary players Christian Cortés and Tristán Tonna of Chango Mutney, though the pair were never regarded as official members. Brothers Matt and Gregg Bissonette instead handled bass and drums during the sessions for Taxi's debut album, Libre. Issued in March 2005, the buoyant rock record leveraged Melon Diesel's existing following to reconnect with listeners. A somewhat mellower sequel, Mil Historias, arrived in 2006. Two years later came Mirando Atrás, a collection of freshly recorded interpretations of songs originally associated with both Taxi and Melon Diesel; the release brought bassist Marcelo Fuentes and drummer Vicente Climent into the fold, yet the band continued to operate nominally as a trio. The same configuration supported Taxi's fourth album, Aquí y Ahora, which earned a nomination for the 2010 Latin Grammy as the group sought entry into the broader international Latin pop arena.
