It might be tempting to view Taylor Barton solely as the spouse of musician and producer G.E. Smith, yet her own abilities make that view incomplete. Though born in Maryland, she established herself as a committed New Yorker. An appearance on Saturday Night Live brought her together with Smith, then guitarist and music director of the program’s house band, who would later serve as her husband, producer, and partner in the independent label Green Mirror Music. Her debut album, Mean American Dream, emerged with the band Generic Blondes and earned critical praise plus radio play. The next solo release, Taylor Barton - Thoroughbred, assembled New York players including guitarist Andy York of the John Mellencamp band, former SNL bassist Paul Ossola, and former Wings drummer Steve Holley. Skinny Kat, issued in 1998, again featured Ossola, Holley, and York together with multi-instrumentalist and producer Smith, and every song on the record was written by Barton herself. She collected ASCAP popular panel awards in 1994, 1997, and 1998 for her songwriting and performances overall. An award-winning playwright, she created The Eric Clapton Breakfast Club and Pedro N' Pete, a Rock N' Roll Odyssey for Eco Kids, and developed another project, the musical Road Clips. For at least two decades she has appeared in theatre, commercials, films, and numerous syndicated radio and television programs. Mid-2000 brought the release of 13 Break Ups, and two years afterward she issued her fifth album, the ambitious Dry Land.
