Team Waterpolo came together in Preston, England during summer 2007, when Fred Davis, Nathan Standlee, Ruggero Lorenzin, and Lex Dunn joined forces. Ten months later the quartet found themselves in the indie spotlight after their debut single, "Letting Go," began spreading rapidly online. Drawing from pop-punk, hip-hop, and ska traditions, the group shaped an energetic, playful, and melody-driven style that echoed Franz Ferdinand, Eskimo Disco, and the Beastie Boys. Shortly after forming, they uploaded several demos to their MySpace page, among them "Letting Go." The exposure prompted MySpace Music to place the band on the site's homepage, propelling them to sudden Internet prominence in the manner of Arctic Monkeys. In March 2008 the group issued "Letting Go" themselves, generating immediate coverage from both online commentators and established music journalists. During the early summer months that year, Team Waterpolo joined the NME New Noise Tour, appearing alongside Crystal Castles. Plans were also in place for a fall single on Moshi Moshi Records.
