Teddy Brent, whose style draws from '70s and '80s funk with a pronounced Prince influence, arrived on the music landscape in 2008 through the catchy single "Vanity." Raised in suburban Detroit, he later relocated to Decatur, IL, enrolling at Milliken University, where he first resolved to pursue music professionally—a choice that directed him back to Detroit and Wayne State University. At the latter he completed a Bachelor's Degree in Voice Performance, sang with the Michigan Opera Theater, and afterward assumed music-director duties at a Filipino-American Presbyterian New Church development. A subsequent relocation to New York City placed him inside a songwriter circle and onstage at the Bottom Line, CBGB, and additional clubs. Following yet another return to Detroit, Brent secured a contract with the Kass Record Group and started recording his debut album, which appeared in April 2008 as Fashionable, fronted by the "Vanity" single.
