Biography
Nick Weiss and Logan Takahashi operate under the nearly unsearchable name Teengirl Fantasy. Their productions merge atmospheric textures with forward momentum, pulling elements from deep house, shoegaze, and related styles that have led writers to label the results “dream-beat.” The two first crossed paths during orientation at Ohio’s Oberlin College and began working on music together within weeks. Although they created a MySpace page for the project, wider attention arrived only after 20 Jazz Funk Greats featured their tracks. Remixes for touring partners Telepathe, a thorough reworking of Mariah Carey’s “Touch My Body,” the free EP TGIF, and singles issued on Dick Move and Merok all helped build momentum. Weiss and Takahashi spent four months studying at Amsterdam’s Gerrit Rietveld Academie in the Netherlands before returning to Oberlin for the spring 2010 semester and eventually settling in New York. Their debut album, 7AM, surfaced in September of that year via True Panther/Merok. Tracer, the 2012 follow-up, adopted a sharper, less diffuse approach, dispensed with samples, and enlisted guest vocalists such as Laurel Halo and Animal Collective’s Panda Bear. The digitally released Nun EP of the following year pointed toward a faster, more instrumental direction for the third album then planned for 2014. That record ultimately took the form of 8AM, which revisited the euphoric tone of the debut and included a cameo by Khalif Jones before arriving on Planet Mu in March 2017.
