Biography
Established in San Francisco, the Telegraph Quartet maintains a strong commitment to educational outreach while presenting both classic works and modern compositions. Its membership consists of violinists Eric Chin and Joseph Maile, violist Pei-Ling Lin, and cellist Jeremiah Shaw, and critics frequently highlight the ensemble’s luminous harmonies, nuanced dynamic range, and intense expressive delivery. The group came together in 2013 and promptly captured first place at the 2014 Fischoff Chamber Music Competition. It next received the Walter W. Naumburg Chamber Music Award in 2016, followed by its appointment as quartet-in-residence at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music in 2017. The ensemble issued its first recording, Into the Light, on Centaur Records in 2018, presenting pieces by Kirchner, Webern, and Britten; that same year it made its Carnegie Hall debut, introducing Robert Sirota’s String Quartet No. 3: Wave Upon Wave. Additional premieres have included Sirota’s Contrapassos and Osvaldo Golijov’s Ever Yours for octet. In 2020 the quartet directed the ChamberFEAST! educational initiative at secondary schools and universities across Taiwan and San Francisco while also launching the interactive online series TeleLab. During a 2022 visit to Vienna, members worked with Schoenberg specialist Henk Guittart in preparation for the 2023 album Divergent Paths: Schoenberg & Ravel.
