David Keenan exited 18 Wheeler on guitar and vocals during 1994 and promptly assembled the Telstar Ponies in Glasgow, Scotland alongside vocalist Rachel Devine, guitarist and singer Gavin Laird, and ex-Teenage Fanclub drummer Brendan O’Hare. Their debut album, In the Space of a Few Minutes, appeared in 1995. Early reviewers sometimes dismissed the Telstar Ponies as an inferior Teenage Fanclub imitation, yet the band’s 1996 follow-up, Voices From the New Music, revealed a sharper experimental edge free of stylistic limits. Their ferocious concerts, frequently shaped by improvisation, directly influenced later post-rock outfits such as Mogwai and Godspeed You Black Emperor!. After O’Hare and Laird departed in 1997 the group ceased recording and instead pursued separate ventures including Phantom Engineer, lonecop, Macrocosmica, Fiend, and Rainspies. The Telstar Ponies reconvened in 1999, at which point bassist Raymond Prior joined the lineup.
