After Latterman disbanded in 2007, the socially conscious singalong punk style that defined the group began surfacing in the projects its former members launched next, among them Iron Chic, Bridge & Tunnel, and RVIVR, before the same approach resurfaced intact inside Tender Defender. Following several one-off Latterman reunion performances over the ensuing years, Mattie Jo Canino, Phil Douglas, and Pat Schramm began discussing the possibility of writing together once more. In 2014 the three entered a New York studio for a week to lay down initial tracks for new songs. Because Douglas had become a highly regarded producer within punk circles and Canino was returning to music after addressing health concerns, the group completed tracking and mixing their first mini-LP during summer 2015. The following year they publicly revealed a project they had kept private for at least three years: the formation of Tender Defender and the scheduled April arrival of the band’s self-titled LP on Dead Broke Rekerds. To promote the record, the trio performed across both the United States and Europe.
