Biography
Teno Afrika returns the amapiano sound from South Africa to its roots in independent creation through his production of minimal, even-tempo dance pieces that feature offbeat patterns, deep house harmonies, and an overall laid-back mood. Appearing in 2020, his first long-player, largely without vocals and titled Amapiano Selections, broadened the style’s reach beyond the African continent. Two years later came the follow-up Where You Are, which incorporated a greater share of vocal contributions.
Born Lutendo Raduvha in Johannesburg in 1999, he spent his formative years moving among townships across South Africa’s Gauteng province. Production work began early for him, and immersion in amapiano—the Zulu term for “pianos”—started in 2016 when the movement was first spreading through the region. By 2019 the genre ranked among South Africa’s leading styles, with Sun-El Musician and Kabza De Small among those achieving major successes. Raduvha’s opening release under the Teno Afrika name, Amapiano Selections, arrived digitally in late 2020 on the American label Awesome Tapes from Africa, formerly a blog, and presented a leaner approach to a local sound that had developed broad commercial reach. The album earned international acclaim and received CD and vinyl editions in 2021, ranking among the subgenre’s earliest physical issues. Where You Are appeared in 2022 with guest vocalists Leyla and KayCee plus co-producers Diego Don and Stylo MusiQ.
