Biography
Raised in Durham, North Carolina amid early immersion in blues, gospel, and rhythm & blues, Teresa Trull launched her musical path with gospel performances in local churches. She later fronted a rock & roll band for several years and subsequently worked the East Coast nightclub circuit. Ever since issuing her debut album, The Ways a Woman Can Be, in 1977, the fiery-haired singer’s gutsy rock & roll vocal approach, together with her songwriting and record-production skills, has earned steadily growing acclaim. Her album Unexpected, recorded with Barbara Higbie, drew especially strong critical notice. Additional artists with whom Trull has shared stages and studio sessions include Bonnie Hayes, David Sanborn, Andy Narell, Darol Anger, Mike Marshall, Alex DeGrassi, Joan Baez, Linda Tillery, Cris Williamson, Holly Near, and Tracy Nelson. As a songwriter she contributed two tracks to the Whispers’ gold-certified album Love for Love, among them the title song, collaborating with Roy Obiedo on both. In 1985 her production work received formal recognition through a nomination for Best Producer of an Independent Album at the New York Music Awards. Endowed with boundless energy, Trull delivers live shows that fuse the high-voltage intensity of Nona Hendryx and the irreverent wit of Bette Midler, while her recordings reflect the bold new directions she continues to explore in expanding her musical reach.
