Biography
Though commercial breakthrough remained elusive, Terry & Gerry stood among the most exhilarating English groups of the 1980s. A demo tape earned them a prominent BBC session hosted by disc jockey and producer John Peel, which in turn opened doors to performances across Holland, Belgium, the United States, and the United Kingdom. The duo took shape in the middle of the decade as the shared project of bassist, vocalist, and songwriter Terry Lilley together with vocalist Gerry Colvin. Before that collaboration, Lilley had already played in the 1978 punk outfit Dennis & the Din Makers and later in Vision Collision, whose gear and practice facilities came courtesy of Duran Duran. Promise notwithstanding, the pair never fulfilled expectations and disbanded following a pair of underwhelming albums. Lilley subsequently distinguished himself as the sole double-bass player in England to obtain a higher national diploma in jazz studies. Colvin later reappeared as half of an acoustic duo alongside Nick Quarmby. Cherry Hill Records issued the fresh album Let’s Get the Hell Back to Lubbock in 2007.
