Originally formed in New York, Tex & the Chex underwent several lineup shifts before developing into the Magicians, a band whose inventive and ominous 1965 single "An Invitation to Cry" later drew notice from '60s collectors when it appeared on the Nuggets compilation. An interracial ensemble, Tex & the Chex featured future Magician Alan Gordon alongside Mike Appel, who would go on to manage and produce Bruce Springsteen, bassist Everett Jacobs, and singer Rod Bristow. Bristow soon gave way to Garry Bonner, while Everett Jacobs was succeeded by the unrelated Jake Jacobs and Appel was replaced by John Townley. On Atlantic the reconfigured group issued a lone single pairing "My Love," credited to Bristow, with "I Do Love You."
