Fronted by Nappy Crayton, the Amazers operated as a Chicago soul ensemble and counted among the first local groups Curtom Records added to its roster during the label’s initial weeks. A vigorous take on Lenny Brown’s “Without a Warning,” taped in Curtom’s opening studio session and issued on its Thomas subsidiary, generated enough regional interest to attract national distribution from Atlantic Records. Unable to produce a comparable follow-up single, the group soon withdrew from the music industry.
