Biography
An unsuccessful California ensemble called the Ambers counted Ralph Mathis, Johnny Mathis’s brother, among its lineup. Physical resemblance to his older sibling often led to mistaken identity, including among attendees at the 1979 Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony honoring Johnny.
Musical interest surfaced in only two of John and Mildred Mathis’s seven children—Johnny and Ralph. The Ambers issued their debut single, “Never Let You Go” backed with “I’ll Make a Try,” on Ebb Records in 1958; two years later they placed their final 45, “All of My Darling” b/w “So Glad,” on Todd Records. Neither effort registered commercially, and the group, whose remaining personnel have never been identified, disbanded soon afterward.
