Comprising musicians drawn from both sides of the Atlantic, the Arrows achieved their greatest visibility in the United Kingdom throughout the middle 1970s. Their sole long-player, First Hit, arrived in 1976 under the guidance of producer Phil Coulter and found modest favor across Europe while making little headway in the United States. During the same period Mickie Most oversaw several of their singles, chief among them the track “I Love Rock ’N Roll,” later a major success for Joan Jett. The lineup consisted of bassist/vocalist Alan Merrill, guitarist Jake Hooker, and drummer Paul Varley; the trio also secured a television commitment that yielded a weekly program running from 1976 to 1977. Following the group’s dissolution in 1978, Merrill launched a solo career that included collaborations with Meat Loaf and Rick Derringer.
