The Backbeat Band

Formed temporarily within the alt-rock landscape, the Backbeat Band assembled in 1993-94 solely to record and support the soundtrack for Backbeat, Iain Softley's fair-to-midlin 1994 film depicting the Fab Four's pre-Beatlemania period across England and Hamburg. The lineup featured Afghan Whigs vocalist Greg Dulli, R.E.M. bassist Mike Mills, Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl, Sonic Youth vocalist/guitarist Thurston Moore, Gumball guitarist and prolific producer Don Fleming, plus Soul Asylum vocalist Dave Pirner. During the steak-and-potato era of '90s alt-rock, the group delivered vibrant renditions of numbers the Beatles had performed in their pre-Brian Epstein leathers at grimy venues including Liverpool's Cavern Club and Hamburg's Star Club. The Backbeat Band tracked the soundtrack's dozen songs in 1993 and staged only one confirmed gig, a blink-and-you-missed-it appearance at the MTV Movie Awards on June 10, 1994.
